WTC Final: Aussie bowlers dominate Indian batsmen on Day 2
The Day 2 of WTC Final was another good day for Australia as Steve Smith completed his century, becoming the second batsman in history after Travis Head to score a hundred in a WTC Final. But after a long wait, Indian bowlers finally struck by getting them both out in quick succession, thanks to Mohammad Siraj (who dismissed Head) and Shardul Thakur (who dismissed Smith). Shami and Jadeja also joined the act and ran through their middle and lower order, except for Alex Carey, who put up a respectable 48 and pushed their total to a massive 469 runs in 121.3 overs.
The Indian batsmen lacked confidence from the very beginning in the second innings. Aussie skipper Pat Cummins dismissed the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma on just 15. Thereon, their bowlers launched a fierce attack on Indian batters as none of the top order players, including Gill, Pujara, and Kohli, could not even reach 20 runs. Finally, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja made a commendable stand as the latter raced to 48 before being dismissed by Nathan Lyon. However, Ajinkya Rahane continues to make a stand in this critical WTC finale with wicketkeeper-batsman Srikant Bharat on his side.
However, it cannot be overlooked that India has been completely routed in this WTC final so far. If they want a chance to draw or perhaps even win this watch, not only will they have to make a big score the next time they bat, but they will also have to dismiss Australia to a low total. India will now be counting on Rahane to take his team away from a follow-on.
