Wrestlers protest temporarily called off; UWW slams arrests
The wrestlers protest have gained momentum and strong support from opposition leaders over the last few days. Well-known wrestlers Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat had recently arrived at Haridwar to dump their medals in the river Ganga, but farmers’ protests leader Naresh Tikait has asked them to give the government a few days, according to ANI. They have been protesting the arrest of Wrestling Federation of India President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is also a BJP MP.
The WFI president has been accused of sexual misconduct against wrestlers, and the case is being tried in the courts. However, no evidence has been found to support these allegations, and therefore the judiciary has not passed a judgement against him. The United World Wrestling has sent its own message in support of the wrestlers with a stern warning that they would remove WFI from the group if action is not taken against Singh. While their protests have been called off for now, the wrestlers protest is likely to continue in times to come.
