Women’s FIFA World Cup Security Tightened After Aukland Shooting
Women’s FIFA World Cup, which is being hosted by New Zealand, witnessed a major security concern recently after a mass shooting took place in Aukland. Just 12 hours before the contest between hosts New Zealand and Norway, an armed man killed two people near a construction site in the city, which is not far from the hotel where Norway’s team was staying. In light of this incident, the security for the Women’s FIFA World Cup has been ramped up.
However, Norway’s team has said that they have no concerns over security and expressed their confidence in the safety measures being taken. “We felt safe the whole time. FIFA has a good security system at the hotel, and we have our own security officer in the squad. Everyone seems calm, and we are preparing as normal for the game tonight,” Norway skipper Maren Mjelde said. The New Zealand government and police personnel sprung into action after the shooting was reported, and the accused gunman was found dead near the elevator of the construction site while four others were injured, as per AP. PM Chris Hipkins reviewed the incident and assured all security assistance to teams touring the country for the Women’s FIFA World Cup.
