Windows 11 24H2 Update Rolls Out with Wi-Fi 7 Support and Expanded AI Features

Microsoft has begun rolling out the much-anticipated Windows 11 24H2 update, also known as the “Windows 11 2024 update.”

This latest version introduces many new features, including enhanced connectivity, improved security, and expanded AI functionalities. A key highlight is the update’s support for Wi-Fi 7, allowing for faster data transfers on compatible devices. One noticeable improvement is the redesign of Quick Settings, which is now scrollable and customizable, making it easier to reorder options. Additionally, the Wi-Fi selection interface includes a Refresh button for re-scanning networks. New Power Saver options are now available for laptops and desktops, allowing users to reduce energy consumption even on mains power. The update brings various new AI-powered features for devices equipped with advanced Neural Processing Units (NPUs), branded as Copilot+ PCs. These include system-wide auto-generated captions that can transcribe and translate audio in any video player, enhancing accessibility. The latest Windows Studio Effects offers tools such as background blur for video calls, Voice Focus to reduce background noise, and a teleprompter with eye-contact adjustment to maintain audience engagement during presentations.

Another significant addition is the return of the controversial Windows Recall feature, which now has enhanced security. Users can save snapshots, which will require secure sign-in through Windows Hello. This feature will be available on Snapdragon X devices starting in October and on Intel and AMD-powered devices beginning in November. Windows Search has also been upgraded with AI. Instead of remembering file names, users can now describe what they’re looking for, like “photos from a barbecue party.” In addition, the new Super Resolution tool allows users to upscale images by up to 8x directly on their device without uploading them to the cloud. The classic Windows Paint application has also received AI enhancements, offering generative fill and erase tools, allowing users to add or remove objects from images. Other useful features include using HDR images as desktop backgrounds, native support for creating and reading RAR and 7z archives in File Explorer, and progress bars under app icons to track ongoing operations. This Windows 11 24H2 update is set to offer a smoother, more intuitive user experience, combining enhanced AI capabilities with new connectivity and personalization options.
