Will Threads Replace Twitter?
Meta’s new social media app Threads has officially been launched for Android and iOS, and it is being actively promoted by the tech conglomerate and its head Mark Zuckerberg. Threads is Meta’s response to Twitter, as it has quite similar features to the latter. This poses a direct threat to Twitter’s dominance and reach as a social messaging platform, and there has been growing discussion around whether Thread will ultimately replace Twitter, as Meta has plenty of resources to compete against the Elon Musk-owned platform, which is still used by nearly 370 million people around the world.
Along with Meta’s resources, Threads also has a natural advantage in terms of attracting users as it is an Instagram-powered app. Most youngsters and celebrities are on Instagram, whereas Twitter has relatively older users. However, Threads current features are far from even getting close to the user-friendly features found in Twitter, which is also decades ahead in building a user base. Furthermore, Twitter itself has aggressive plans in making it an alternative streaming platform of YouTube. Hence, while Threads certainly can give Twitter a run for its money, the latter is miles away from being replaced any time soon.
