Why Countering Childhood Obesity Has become Urgent
The World Economic Forum shared alarming news relating to childhood obesity that highlights the urgency of the problem. As per its report, the cases of childhood obesity are likely to double by the year 2035, whereas nearly half of the adult world population will be obese in the same year. The forum has urged for tangible steps to be taken at a global scale to counter child and adult obesity. As per their data, 140 million boys between the ages of 5-19 will be obese by 2025, whereas 101 million girls will be in the category during the same year.
This number will go up to 208 million and 175 million, respectively, by the year 2035. This scale is enough to show how serious the problem of childhood obesity really is. Along with public health and wellness, this problem also poses a threat to the world economy. Childhood obesity will likely cost the world $4 trillion annually by 2035, which will then amount to 3% of the world’s GDP. Governments around the world will have to implement sharp policy changes starting today in order to see improved results in the coming decade.
