Wagner Group Mutiny: Will Putin Regain his Losing Power?
The last few days have brought sensational developments from Russia after the Wagner group mutiny was launched in Russia against President Vladimir Putin. The private mercenary group, which is headed by former Putin loyalist Yevgheny Prigozhin, turned their guns from Ukranian forces and started marching towards Moscow as the world watched with held breaths. However, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko, who holds great relations with Putin, intervened and convinced Prigozhin to end this military coup against Russia, promising him a safe haven in his country, which finally put an end to this major threat to Putin’s power.
Despite the failed Wagner group mutiny, this massive event has cast a shadow over Vladimir Putin’s future as the Russian head of state. Russia has been battling Ukraine for nearly a year-and-a-half with no visible end to this conflict, and this has severely damaged the morale of not just its military but also its citizens. Putin’s grip on power certainly appears to be slipping, as the visuals of Russian civilians welcoming this coup also emerged online. While he continues to hold his ground, Putin will have to send a strong message to the world after facing a serious assault on his power that took place with the Wagner group mutiny.
