Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar denounced the horrific alleged rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, describing the incident as “extremely distressing” and “painful.” He emphasized the need for a deterrent ecosystem to punish perpetrators of such crimes, echoing President Droupadi Murmu’s statement, “Enough is enough.” Dhankhar, who addressed students at Delhi University’s Bharti College, highlighted the fear that girls and women live with due to such incidents. Dhankhar’s tenure as a tumultuous relationship with the ruling Trinamool Congress marked West Bengal Governor. He referred to President Murmu’s article, “Women’s Safety: Enough is Enough,” which was her first statement on the incident. Murmu, a tribal woman herself, expressed her views on the August 9 incident, which has sparked widespread protests.

Dhankhar drew parallels with the 2012 Delhi gang rape incident, stressing the need for a strong ecosystem to punish culprits and instill fear in their minds. He slammed those justifying the rape incident, saying he is appalled by their thought process. Additionally, he criticized “anti-national” narratives against India, calling it the biggest challenge to the country’s development. Dhankhar urged students to prioritize national interest above political and ideological differences. His speech emphasized the need for collective action to address crimes against women and promote national unity. As Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman, Dhankhar’s statements carry significant weight, and his condemnation of the Kolkata incident reflects the growing demand for stronger action against gender-based violence.
