Union Home Ministry to Implement CAA Before 2024 Elections?

The Union Home Ministry is reportedly working on the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections that will take place in the coming months. As per a Republic report, the ministry officials are working on beginning the granting of Bharatiya citizenship even as Home Minister Amit Shah continues his relentless election campaign under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An official told the publication that the online portal is now ready to conduct the entire process, which will be digital in nature.

The Union Home Ministry official also stated that the applicants of CAA will need to disclose their year of entry in Bharat without any travel documentation. The implementation of CAA was briefly delayed after the Shaheen Bagh protests that took place before the COVID-19 pandemic. The law continues to receive resistance from CM Mamata Banerjee’s government in West Bengal, but Shah has asserted that the law cannot be blocked by state governments, and that the West Bengal CM is misleading the people about CAA. More details on this development are awaited.
