UCC in Uttarakhand: Here are the Key Takeaways

All eyes are on the draft of UCC in Uttarakhand, which will be introduced in the State Assembly on February 6. CM Pushkar Singh Dhami-led State Cabinet has already given its approval to the bill after having closely studied its aspects in the expert review meetings. There are several facets of this bill that will create a major socio-political impact on the state. The Uniform Civil Code bill makes a complete ban on polygamy and child marriage, regardless of faith or other backgrounds.

There are strong provisions for property rights within the draft of UCC in Uttarakhand as well. All the marriages will have to be mandatorily registered, and there is a common marriageable age for girls to make sure that they complete their education. In the cases of divorce, the husband and wife will both have equal grounds to make their case. The bill also ensures that in case of a person’s death, the property rights will be equally extended towards their spouse, children, and parents. Those engaged in live-in relationships will also have to declare their status under this law.
