Twitter to X.COM migration complete
Elon Musk has completed the rebranding of Twitter to X, with Twitter.com now redirecting to X.com. This final step follows months of gradual changes since Musk first announced his plan in July of the previous year. Initially, X.com links were redirected to Twitter.com despite the user interface reflecting the new branding. Musk proudly announced on X that all core systems operate under the X.com domain.
This change signifies the end of Twitter’s iconic bird logo and name. X.com is a precious domain, one of only 26 single-letter domains in English. Musk’s vision is to transform Twitter into an “everything app,” akin to China’s WeChat, making a more generic and memorable brand like X more suitable. Additionally, the rebrand distances the platform from the controversies associated with Twitter’s past speech policies.
Despite these strategic moves, the rebranding has been criticized online. While the concept of a versatile, easily recognizable brand and a unique domain would generate significant excitement, especially for a Silicon Valley startup, Musk’s association has influenced public perception negatively. The internet’s reaction to the rebranding has been overwhelmingly negative, highlighting a disconnect between Musk’s ambitions and public reception.
