Former US president Donald Trump aims to offer Green-Card for migrants on scoring a degree
Former US President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump recently proposed granting automatic green cards to international students graduating from US colleges
This proposal of Trump marks a significant shift from his traditionally stringent immigration stance. It has rekindled the debate on US immigration policy. Venture capitalist Debarghya Das, also known as Deedy Das on X, expressed scepticism about Trump’s proposal. Das, associated with Menlo Ventures, highlighted several challenges in implementing the green card plan, even if Trump wins the presidential election. In his analysis, Das pointed out the high denial rates for H-1B visas during Trump’s previous administration and the prevailing sentiment among Republicans and his supporters against high-skilled immigration. Das emphasized that immigration issues are rarely a focal point for presidential campaigns.
Trump noted that the affected groups, like Indians and other internationals, do not have voting rights in the US. On the All-In podcast, hosted by tech investor Jason Calacanis, he reiterated his promise, stating that graduates should receive a green card along with their diploma, including those from junior colleges. This idea aims to retain skilled graduates in the US, providing them the right to live and work permanently and potentially a path to citizenship. The proposal stands in contrast to current President Joe Biden’s recent efforts, which include a plan to provide a path to citizenship for immigrants married to US citizens while tightening controls on illegal border crossings. Trump’s new stance is seen as an effort to appeal to a broader audience ahead of the 2024 elections. His comments have sparked discussions about the feasibility and potential impact of such a policy, considering the existing political and social dynamics around immigration in the US.
