Dr Neerja Gupta, the Vice-Chancellor of Gujarat University, emphasized the need for cultural sensitization among foreign students, especially regarding food habits and behaviour, considering the vegetarian ethos prevailing in the state. And stated that namaz cannot be the sole cause of violence, along with the lack of cultural sensitization among the foreign students.
In an interview with Ritu Sharma following the recent attack on foreign students at the university, Gupta, who previously served as the coordinator of the Study Abroad Programme (SAP) for 16 years, highlighted that the offering of namaz couldn’t have been the sole instigation for the violence.
“It’s not just about religious practices; it could be more about cultural differences. Foreign students need better mentoring for cultural assimilation. For instance, their consumption of non-vegetarian food contrasts with Gujarat’s predominantly vegetarian society. The disposal of leftover food could also lead to issues, particularly if it attracts street dogs. These students stand out more, given their foreign status. Therefore, it’s evident that the situation is more nuanced than just one incident.” – says Neerja.

No part of the globe has actually been able to understand the communal war between Hindus and the migrated leftovers.
