Taking cognisance of mental health issues at work and its impact on business
There has been a growing discussion around mental health around the world, where health institutions and other organisations are finally acknowledging this problem and its impact on humans. Psychologists and other therapists often urge their patients to discuss their personal lives to identify the root causes of their stress, but the stress levels of many people are connected with their professional lives. According to the Deloittle Mental Health survey, a poor workforce environment costs Indian entrepreneurs and employers $14 billion each year.
As per this study, a whopping 47% of the respondents claim that their biggest stress problems are related to their workplace. Professional rivalries and the so-called office politics make a person overthink and take these problems into their personal lives as well. This problem can be a major motivation killer for the employees, even if they get incentives for performing well. It is thus in the interest of the employers and managers to ensure that their HR department works on their employees’ mental health proactively and organise initiatives that keep their morale up, and their work stress at bay.
