A recent survey reveals that 91 percent of Indian CEOs prefer to promote in-office employees over remote workers, highlighting a significant shift in workplace dynamics post-pandemic. According to the KPMG 2024 CEO Outlook survey, which collected responses from 125 Indian CEOs, business leaders in India are pushing for a return to in-office work environments within the next three years. While globally, 87 percent of CEOs expressed similar views, the trend is slightly stronger in India. A significant 78 percent of Indian CEOs envision their employees returning to the office in the near future, compared to 83 percent globally. Only 14 percent of Indian business leaders are open to a fully remote workforce, while 30 percent foresee a hybrid model. Sunit Sinha, head of human capital advisory solutions at KPMG India, noted that the post-COVID-19 era has led employees to reassess their work preferences.

However, this shift towards in-office work is being driven by companies eager to return to pre-pandemic norms, with corporate giants like Amazon and Dell leading the charge. Amazon recently announced that employees would be required to work from the office five days a week starting in January 2025, sparking dissatisfaction among its workforce. A survey conducted on Blind, an anonymous job review platform, revealed that 73 percent of Amazon employees are considering quitting due to the mandate, with 91 percent expressing dissatisfaction. This growing divide between corporate leadership and employee preferences underscores the complex challenges businesses face in navigating the future of work. While companies like Amazon are pushing for full-time office work, employees are increasingly resistant, forcing leaders to balance productivity and employee morale in a rapidly evolving landscape.
