Supreme Court Rebukes Delhi Government Over Firecracker Ban Violations

The Supreme Court of India has expressed serious concerns regarding the failure to enforce the ban on firecrackers in Delhi, which has contributed to the alarming levels of air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR). While addressing the issue on Monday, the court sought an explanation from the Delhi government on why it failed to implement the guidelines on banning firecrackers, particularly during Diwali. The bench cited newspaper reports indicating that the ban was inadequately enforced, allowing extensive firecracker use that worsened Delhi’s air quality. In a firm tone, the apex court questioned the Delhi authorities. It reprimanded them over their inaction in curbing pollution spikes in the city, already notorious for its poor air quality.

In addition to questioning the Delhi government, the Supreme Court directed the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and the states of Punjab and Haryana to address the persistent issue of stubble burning. This agricultural practice, widely practiced in these states, is a significant contributor to NCR’s pollution levels, especially during the winter months. The court emphasized that stubble-burning restrictions were also inadequately enforced, as evidenced by reports showing an increase in farm fires over the Diwali period. The bench noted that the pollution levels in Delhi this year have been higher than in 2022 and 2023, pointing to a worrying lack of effective action by responsible agencies. By highlighting these issues, the Supreme Court underscored the urgent need for a coordinated response to address both stubble burning and the ineffective enforcement of the firecracker ban.
