Sunil Chhetri spoke his heart out concluding his journey
Sunil Chhetri, the iconic Indian football captain, has announced his retirement from international football, marking the end of a remarkable career. With 94 goals since his debut in 2005, Chhetri is India’s all-time top scorer and most-capped player. His final match will be the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6. Reflecting on his journey, Chhetri vividly remembered his debut, recalling the mix of excitement and nerves when his first national team coach, Sukhi sir, informed him he would start. He shared, “I sprayed perfume on my jersey; I have no idea why. That day, from breakfast to my first goal, is unforgettable and one of the best days of my national team journey.”
As we reflect on his 19-year career, Chhetri’s words echo with a mix of duty, pressure, and immense joy. ‘I never thought individually, these are the many games that I’ve played for the country, this is what I’ve done, good or bad, but now I did it,’ he said. The last few months have been a period of introspection leading up to his decision to retire. ‘This next game is going to be my last,’ he concluded. Chhetri’s milestone 150th appearance for India was in March, where he scored against Afghanistan in Guwahati, although India lost 1-2. Beyond his national records, Chhetri stands third among active international goal scorers, behind only Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Chhetri’s retirement signifies the end of an era in Indian football. His leadership and goal-scoring prowess have left an indelible mark on the sport, serving as a beacon of inspiration for countless young players. As he steps off the field, he does so with immense pride, knowing he gave his all for his country.
