Siddaramaiah to be the next Karnataka CM; DK Shivakumar named as Dy. CM
After long speculation of who would be Karnataka’s next Chief Minister, Congress has decided to hand over this responsibility to their veteran leader Siddaramaiah, as per ANI inputs. There was a race between him and DK Shivakumar for this post, as both leaders were intent on becoming CM. Many were speculating Shivakumar to be named as CM since he has played a major role in Congress’ win in the assembly elections. However, after long discussions, he has been named as the Deputy CM.
Siddaramaiah had previously held the post of CM from 2013 – 2018 before being replaced by HD Kumaraswamy after Congress made an alliance with JDS. This alliance was eventually broken before BJP formed a government. However, Congress convincingly defeated their Bommai-led government in this election by winning a huge majority of 135 out of the total 224 seats, whereas BJP was reduced to 66 seats. The decision to make Siddaramaiah the Chief Minister was taken in the presence of Shivakumar and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge in consultation with former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.
