Samsung’s Bixby to get a layer of AI
Samsung has confirmed that Bixby will receive a generative AI upgrade later this year
TM Roh, President of Samsung Mobile Division, announced that Bixby will use Samsung’s large language models rather than partnering with Google or OpenAI, at least initially. Despite this upgrade, Samsung will continue to support multiple voice assistants on its devices, meaning users can have both the enhanced Bixby and the Google Gemini replacement for Google Assistant. Although users can also download the ChatGPT app, it won’t be as integrated into the OS as Samsung’s or Google’s offerings. Samsung had previously hinted at this AI-enhanced Bixby but provided a release timeline. It is speculated that the new Bixby could be part of One UI 7, Samsung’s custom interface for the upcoming Android 15, though this has not been confirmed.
Roh emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing Bixby with generative AI technology, stating, “We are reinforcing and bringing more AI capabilities to our products. As consumers use more AI capabilities, they can feel the convenience and benefits they bring. I strongly believe these Galaxy AI and mobile AI features are strong motivations and drivers for purchasing new products.” This move aligns with Samsung’s strategy to enhance user experience and convenience through advanced AI capabilities, which they believe will drive new product purchases. The introduction of generative AI to Bixby marks a significant step in Samsung’s ongoing efforts to integrate more sophisticated AI technologies into its ecosystem, promising users a more intelligent and responsive digital assistant experience.
