Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, reportedly plans to support Donald Trump’s presidential campaign with significant financial contributions. According to the Wall Street Journal, Musk intends to donate $45 million monthly to bolster Trump’s bid for re-election. This move marks a notable shift, as Musk has previously donated to a political group working to elect a rival candidate. Trump made a noteworthy entrance at the Republican National Convention on July 15, just two days after narrowly escaping an assassination attempt. With a thick bandage covering his right ear, he received a thunderous ovation from supporters at the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. The crowd chanted “Fight! Fight! Fight!” in response to Trump’s dramatic appearance. Standing with some of his children and US Senator J.D. Vance, who had been announced as Trump’s running mate earlier that day, Trump appeared visibly moved by the warm reception. The convention began hours after Trump secured a legal victory with a federal judge’s dismissal of one of his criminal prosecutions.
Trump is expected to formally accept the party’s nomination in a prime-time speech on Thursday, setting the stage for a showdown against Democratic President Joe Biden in the upcoming November 5 election. During the convention’s evening session, speakers criticized Biden’s economic policies, blaming him for persistent inflation despite recent easing. Senator Tim Scott, who previously competed against Trump for the nomination, credited Trump’s survival to divine intervention, declaring, “Our God still saves.” Vance, now one of Trump’s staunchest defenders, has aligned with Trump’s disputed claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election. Despite Vance’s popularity among Trump’s core supporters, his conservative stance on issues like abortion may alienate moderate voters. Vance is expected to address the convention on Wednesday. Speaking at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, President Biden described Vance as “a clone of Trump on the issues.” At the same time, Democrats criticized Vance’s record on reproductive rights. Vance has stated his support for Trump’s position that each state should decide its abortion laws.
