President Murmu, PM Modi Criticise Oppn. Mimicry on VP Dhankar
President Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi have both broken silence on the recent incident of Opposition leaders insulting Vice President and Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankar. While President Murmu expressed her discontent on the matter in her message on social media, PM Modi dialed VP Dhankar and showed his support against such behaviour. The President’s message reads, “I was dismayed to see the manner in which our respected Vice President was humiliated in the Parliament complex.”
She further added, “Elected representatives must be free to express themselves, but their expression should be within the norms of dignity and courtesy. That has been the Parliamentary tradition we are proud of, and the People of India expect them to uphold it.” The controversy erupted after TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee was recorded making fun of Dhankar by doing his mimicry outside the Parliament, while Congress MP Rahul Gandhi shot a video of his mimicry on his phone. This incident has invited severe backlash against the Opposition leaders from not only Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla but also several politicians across parties.
