PM Trudeau: Google, Meta using bully tactics against Canada
PM Trudeau has made tough remarks against American tech giants Google and Meta with regard to the news bill that pushes for financial backing for news publications. The tech conglomerates have protested the ‘Online News Act’, saying that it is not financially sustainable for their organisations. Justin Trudeau responded to these protests by saying, “The fact that these internet giants would rather cut off Canadians’ access to local news than pay their fair share is a real problem, and now they’re resorting to bullying tactics to try and get their way – it’s not going to work.”
PM Trudeau further continued, “The various internet giants like Meta are posting every year record profits, while at the same time local independent news is struggling across this country. We will continue to make sure that these incredibly profitable corporations contribute to strengthening our democracy.” Google’s spokesperson Shay Purdy has slammed Canada’s decision saying that it has “serious problems that make it unworkable” for their products and services. Meta, on the other hand, responded by saying that news does not have any economic value for their platforms. This conflict is likely to persist as the tech firms continue to remain publicly critical of this law.
