Yoga events in the Kashmir valley kicked off International Yoga Day celebrations ahead of the main event on June 21, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Scheduled to visit on Thursday, Modi will conduct the main event at the SKICC on Dal Lake’s banks on Friday morning. Before this, numerous yoga events occurred across the city and valley, including a notable one at Lal Chowk’s iconic clock tower, where students performed various asanas. Another event was held at SKICC, marking the tenth International Yoga Day. Security has been heightened for Modi’s visit, with a multi-layer security ring around SKICC and sealed roads leading to the venue.
The SKICC underwent a thorough sanitization process, and background checks were conducted on all officials, security personnel, and sportspersons involved. Additionally, the Jammu and Kashmir Police declared the city a temporary “red zone,” banning drone operations to ensure security. This visit marks Modi’s first to Jammu and Kashmir since his third term as Prime Minister began. Srinagar Police announced on social media that the city’s “Temporary Red Zone” status for drones aligns with Rule 24(2) of Drone Rules, 2021, warning that unauthorized drone operations would be penalized. Participants for the main event have been selected and trained in various asanas performed by the Prime Minister.
