PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti Slams 7 Arrests in J&K

Known for a critical stance against the Centre on security, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti has criticised the arrest of 7 people in Jammu and Kashmir, which was recently carried out by the security agencies. The arrests have been reportedly made after the individuals indulged in a public celebration of Bharat’s World Cup loss under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). However, the former Chief Minister of J&K has opposed this decision and also attacked the very use of UAPA on journalists, activities, and students.

“Disconcerting & shocking that cheering for a winning team too has been criminalised in Kashmir. Normalising slapping of draconian laws like UAPA on journalists, activists & now students reveals the ruthless mindset of the establishment towards youngsters in J&K. Hearts & minds of people through barrel of a gun,” PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said on X. Mufti has been a vocal critic of the Modi government and its decision to abrogate Article 370 and 35A which gave J&K its own constitution and flag. Further developments on these arrests are expected soon.
