The opposition in West Bengal has vehemently criticized the Mamata Banerjee-led government following a disturbing incident captured on video showing a man brutally assaulting two individuals, including a woman, in Chopra, Uttar Dinajpur district

In the video footage, the assailant is seen ruthlessly attacking a woman with sticks while onlookers appear passive, even assisting him at times. The violence escalates as the man also targets another individual amidst the crowd’s silent observance. The incident reportedly stemmed from a decision made by a kangaroo court, highlighting the prevalence of extrajudicial proceedings in certain areas. Amit Malviya, head of BJP’s IT Cell, condemned the incident on social media, emphasizing it as indicative of Mamata Banerjee’s governance failures and alleging connections between the assailant and local TMC leadership. He underscored concerns about the perceived proliferation of Sharia Courts and criticized the Chief Minister’s approach to law and order.
CPM’s Md Salim and Congress’s Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury echoed condemnation, highlighting ongoing violence against citizens and political opponents in the state despite recent electoral outcomes. They criticized the ruling TMC for its handling of lawlessness and demanded accountability. In response, the West Bengal Police have initiated an investigation, registering a case against the perpetrator captured in the viral video. Superintendent Joby Thomas K of Islampur Police assured swift action, stating that raids are underway to apprehend the accused and ascertain the motives behind the attack. While TMC district president Kaniyalal Agarwal attributed the incident to personal disputes rather than political affiliations, TMC spokesperson Shantanu Sen acknowledged the historical context of such incidents in the region, pledging a thorough investigation.
