Negligence cost more than 20 lives in Rajkot Gaming Zone

A devastating fire at a gaming zone in Rajkot, known as TRP, resulted in the deaths of 28 people, including nine children, raising serious concerns about the facility’s safety standards. The incident occurred at an amusement center operating without a no-objection certificate (NOC) for fire safety and with only one exit. The gaming zone was crowded due to a weekend discount offer, with tickets priced at just ₹99. The blaze, suspected to have originated from a short circuit, spread rapidly. The intensity was such that smoke was visible from several kilometers away, and the bodies were charred beyond recognition. DNA samples of the victims and their relatives have been collected for identification purposes. Firefighters faced significant challenges due to the collapse of a temporary structure and strong winds, hindering their efforts.

The facility’s lack of necessary licenses and absence of a fire NOC from the Rajkot Municipal Corporation has drawn sharp criticism. Rajkot Mayor Nayna Pedhadiya, who oversaw rescue operations, confirmed the absence of the NOC and promised a thorough investigation into how such a large gaming zone operated without it. She emphasized that no political interference would be tolerated in addressing the issue. The fire caused panic among visitors as the temporary structure near the entrance collapsed, trapping people inside. Rajkot fire officer Mr. Kher highlighted that this obstruction made evacuation difficult. The owner and manager of TRP have been detained for questioning. In response to the tragedy, the state Director General of Police has ordered inspections of all gaming zones in Gujarat to ensure compliance with fire safety regulations. Police commissioners and superintendents must collaborate with municipal fire officers to identify and close facilities without proper fire safety permissions. This directive aims to prevent such disasters and ensure the safety of public entertainment venues.
