In a series of tragic incidents, ten people in Bihar have died due to lightning strikes in the last 24 hours, while four children drowned in a rainwater pond in Uttar Pradesh’s Agra
The lightning fatalities in Bihar occurred across various districts amid ongoing rain and thunderstorms over the past weeks. According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, two deaths were reported in Nalanda district and one each in Vaishali, Bhagalpur, Saharsa, Rohtas, Saran, Jamui, Bhojpur, and Gopalganj. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh to the families of each deceased and urged people to take precautions during severe weather, noting that about 40 people have died due to lightning in the past couple of weeks. In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, four children drowned in a pond formed by rainwater accumulation near the Yamuna Expressway while they were bathing.
Five others who attempted to rescue the children had to be saved by police and locals. Agra ACP Sukanya Sharma reported, “This morning, the family went to the rainwater pond and drowned. A family of nine had were reported dead, which included 4 children. Five people were successfully rescued alive by the rescue team.” A local witness, Nitin Upadhyay, stated that all nine family members started drowning while playing in the pond, but fortunately, four children and one woman were safely rescued. These incidents highlight the severe impact of the recent weather conditions in the region, underscoring the need for vigilance and safety measures during such unpredictable weather events.
