MPs Warn UK PM Rishi Sunak Warned About Chinese EVs
UK PM Rishi Sunak is yet to ascertain his government’s decision on allowing the imports of Chinese electric vehicles into the country. China’s automobile companies like BYD have been eagerly looking for ways to expand their footprint across the globe. The United Kingdom has decided to ban all new petrol and diesel vehicles by 2030 to cut out all carbon emissions. China has consequently set its aim to dominate the British automobile market in the future. However, several Members of the UK Parliament have warned Sunak against allowing imports of Chinese electric vehicles.
An MP told the Telegraph, “If it is manufactured in a country like China, how certain can you be that it won’t be a vehicle for collecting intel and data? If you have electric vehicles manufactured by countries that are already using technology to spy, why would they not do the same here? It will be used with all of the data that they collect, and that’s how it becomes incredibly valuable and quite dangerous.” Recently, the Indian government had also denied BYD’s request to set up a major manufacturing plant in India to curb their plan to tap into the Indian automobile market. UK PM Rishi Sunak will likely announce the government’s decision on this matter in their Parliament soon.
