Modi to address a High-Level UN General Assembly on 26th of September
PM Modi will address a High-Level UNGA on the 26th of September. This session, part of the 79th UN General Assembly, will be held from September 24-30
The provisional list, issued on Monday, indicates that Modi, called India’s “Head of Government,” will speak in the afternoon. The General Debate traditionally begins in Brazil on September 24, followed by the US, where President Joe Biden will deliver his final address of his current term ahead of the November presidential elections. Modi, serving his historic third term as India’s Prime Minister, last addressed the UNGA in September 2021. During his visit to the UN headquarters on June 21 last year, Modi led Yoga Day celebrations before proceeding to Washington DC for a State Visit hosted by President Biden. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will present his report before the start of the General Debate, followed by an address from the President of the 79th General Assembly session.
Guterres also organizes the ambitious Summit of the Future during the high-level week, with action days on September 20-21 and the Summit on September 22-23. Global leaders will gather to adopt the Pact for the Future, which includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations. The UN emphasizes the Summit’s significance, stating, “The Summit is a significant event, bringing together world leaders to establish a new international consensus on how to achieve a better present and secure the future.” The organization highlights the increasing importance of practical global cooperation, which is challenging due to an environment of mistrust and outdated structures that no longer reflect today’s political and economic realities.
