Modi Govt. Renames Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial, Oppn. Protests
The Modi govt. has made several decisions in its nine years of power to bring back the focus on India’s deep cultural roots and glorify the various imminent personalities of our country. In this regard, they have renamed several institutions and places after such personalities. The Modi govt. has now announced that the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Museum and Library into Prime Ministers’ Memorial Museum and Library. The PMML Vice-Chairman Surya Prakash wrote on X, “Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is now Prime Ministers Museum and Library (PMML) Society w.e.f August 14, 2023 – in tune with the democratisation and diversification of the remit of the society. Happy Independence Day! @narendramodi, @rajnathsingh @MinOfCultureGoI.”
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticised this move by posting, “Mr. Modi possesses a huge bundle of fears, complexes and insecurities, especially when it comes to our first and longest serving Prime Minister. He has had a single point agenda of denying, distorting, defaming and destroying Nehru and the Nehruvian legacy. He has erased N and put P instead. That P is really for pettiness and peeve.” The Modi govt. had also earlier renamed ‘Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards’ to ‘Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award’ after the legendary hockey player and Olympic Gold winner Major Dhyanchand.
