MHA warns Public to be aware of Cyber Criminals posing as Government Officials

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently cautioned the public about cyber criminals masquerading as government officials. These fraudsters employ tactics like blackmail and false digital arrests, impersonating officers from various government agencies such as the NCB, CBI, RBI, and state police forces. The MHA noted a surge in complaints filed on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) regarding intimidation, blackmail, extortion, and digital arrests by these impostors. They typically contact victims, claiming that they are either sending or receiving illegal items like drugs or fake passports. In some cases, they falsely inform victims about their involvement in a crime or an accident involving a loved one.

Demanding money to resolve these fabricated cases, the criminals sometimes even conduct fake “digital arrests,” coercing victims into remaining visible over video conferencing platforms until their demands are met. To enhance their credibility, they set up studios resembling police stations and government offices and wear uniforms. Victims across the country have suffered significant financial losses due to these scams, which are believed to be orchestrated by organized cross-border crime syndicates. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the MHA collaborates with other ministries, agencies, and organizations to combat such fraud. Measures include blocking Skype IDs, SIM cards, mobile devices, and mule accounts used by fraudsters.

Individuals who encounter such situations are advised to report them immediately to the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or the official website for assistance. Additionally, the I4C disseminates alerts through social media platforms like Cyber-dost on Facebook, Instagram, and others to educate the public about potential threats and prevent further victimization.
