Manipur violence continues, five killed ahead of Amit Shah’s visit
There has been an escalation in Manipur violence just a day before Home Minister Amit Shah is due to visit the state. According to PTI, five people, including one policeman, has been killed in a new case of violence. The Indian Army continues to be deployed on the ground and has been carrying on search operations to seize illegal firearms. While the imposed curfew and military deployment had drastically reduced the violence, this new incident has brought a roadblock toward normalcy in Manipur.
The situation in the state has remained volatile for several weeks now. The judicial verdict that described the Methei community in Scheduled Tribes (ST) list became the catalyst to this Manipur violence that has brought the entire state to a standstill. Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive this evening, where he will take note of the situation and decide on further course of action. Steps will likely be taken to create a truce between the communities, but a contingency plan to uphold state security is also expected to be in place.
