Manipur violence: Efforts on to bring normalcy in Imphal; Situation in Moreh, Kangpokpi under control
The state of Manipur has gone through intense rioting in the last few days after it was decided to give the Metei community a Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Violence had erupted all over the state, which drove the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to deploy the army and paramilitary forces in the state capital, Imphal and other districts. The clashes in Moreh and Kangpokpi have been neutralised, and the areas are gradually returning to normalcy. However, the situation in Imphal is yet to be stabilised, as per PTI.
These violent clashes began after the Naga and Kuki tribal communities protested the Metei community’s inclusion in the ST list, claiming that they are a majority community. The police have further revealed that the protests became violent after a mob of armed men attacked the people of the Metei community, which caused the security personnel to intervene. It is yet to be confirmed who is behind the attack. The Indian Army and paramilitary will continue to hold their ground in Manipur until the situation remains volatile.
