Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has escalated tensions between Canada and India by accusing the Indian government of a “horrific mistake” in interfering with Canadian sovereignty. He claimed that India was involved in the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver in June 2023 and that this was part of a broader operation by Indian representatives to target dissidents within Canada systematically. Trudeau’s remarks were the strongest in the year-long dispute, which has strained relations between the two nations. This controversy deepened when Canada expelled six Indian diplomats, accusing them of involvement in Nijjar’s assassination. India retaliated by expelling an equal number of Canadian diplomats. It denied all allegations, labelling them “preposterous” and part of a smear campaign for political gain.
Trudeau sticked to his statements claiming that violence against Canadians had been directed by the Indian government, stating that New Delhi had only intensified its attacks on Ottawa when the charges were made public. Despite the diplomatic fallout, Trudeau emphasized that Canada does not seek conflict with India, a key economic partner, but stressed that he would continue to defend Canadian sovereignty. The trade relationship between the two countries has been significant, with bilateral trade in goods reaching $8.4 billion in 2023-24. Moreover, Canadian Pension Funds have invested over $75 billion in India, and more than 600 Canadian companies operate there. However, the escalating political tension could impact this robust economic engagement as both countries navigate the growing rift over these serious allegations.
