The unexpected announcement by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal to step down as Delhi Chief Minister(CM) has sparked widespread speculation about who will succeed him. However, AAP has reaffirmed its commitment to Kejriwal, confirming that he will remain their candidate for Chief Minister in the forthcoming Delhi elections, putting to rest rumors of a change in leadership. Delhi Minister Atishi and Sunita Kejriwal, the incumbent CM’s wife, are among the key contenders being considered for the next CM. Atishi lauded Kejriwal for setting a new standard of political integrity and underscored that the decision ultimately lies with the voters. Sunita Kejriwal’s increased visibility and political activity during Kejriwal’s recent jail term have fueled discussions about her potential role. She actively participated in public rallies and led the party’s campaign for the Assembly elections in Haryana.
Among other potential successors, Gopal Rai, a veteran party member and minister, stands out for his ability to bring stability. At the same time, Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj is also in the running, recognized for his vocal critiques of the BJP and the Lieutenant Governor, showcasing his bold leadership style. The Delhi Cabinet currently includes five ministers, with Kailash Gahlot overseeing key portfolios such as Home, Law, Finance, and Planning. The BJP has slammed Kejriwal’s resignation, questioning the timing and suggesting that it might be a tactic to garner public sympathy. AAP views the interim period until February as a temporary phase, with Kejriwal advocating for the Delhi elections to be held in November to coincide with the Maharashtra polls.
