Jaishankar has outlined the foreign policy priorities for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s third term, focusing on resolving border issues with China, addressing cross-border terrorism from Pakistan, and securing a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). A day after retaining his position as the Minister of External Affairs, Jaishankar detailed the approach towards China, emphasizing the need to find solutions to ongoing border disputes, which escalated significantly in 2020 with the Galwan clash. Regarding Pakistan, Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to resolving the issue of cross-border terrorism. He emphasized that India will not tolerate terrorism and insists that it is Pakistan’s responsibility to foster an environment free of terror and hostility to improve bilateral relations.
Additionally, Jaishankar expressed confidence in India’s potential to secure a permanent UNSC seat within the next five years, underlining the country’s growing global influence. He highlighted India’s increasing role on the world stage, noting the trust and friendship India has garnered from other nations, especially during crises. He pointed out India’s advocacy for the Global South, exemplified by the successful push for African Union membership during its G20 presidency, as evidence of India’s rising responsibilities and credibility. Jaishankar, who has been a key figure in shaping India’s diplomatic strategies during Modi’s second term, resumed his duties with a clear vision for the future. He stressed that under Modi’s leadership, India’s foreign policy is poised for success, reflecting the nation’s expanding influence and the respect it commands globally.
