Salima Tete has been appointed captain of the 18-member Indian women’s hockey team set to compete in the Asian Champions Trophy, scheduled from November 11 to 20 at Rajgir Hockey Stadium in Bihar. Vice-captain Navneet Kaur will support Tete as India aims to defend its title from last year. The tournament features six nations, including Olympic silver-medalists China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand, promising intense competition. India will launch their campaign against Malaysia on November 11. Reflecting on the team’s preparation, Tete shared her excitement: “It’s an honor to lead the team as defending champions. We have trained rigorously, and with a blend of experience and young talent, we are focused on retaining the title with the same passion we showed last year.”
Seasoned Savita and rising star Bichu Devi Kharibam will share responsibility for goalkeeping. The defensive lineup is solid, featuring Udita, Jyoti, Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke. In the midfield, Tete will be backed by Neha, Sharmila Devi, Manisha Chauhan, Sunelita Toppo, and Lalremsiami, bringing dynamism to the team’s play. Leading the forward line, Navneet Kaur will be joined by Sangita Kumari, Deepika, Preeti Dubey, and Beauty Dungdung, who will return to the team post-rehabilitation alongside Sushila. Vice-captain Navneet exuded optimism about her team’s preparedness and cohesion, stating, “Competing in front of our hometown fans will be a significant advantage. We’re well-prepared to take on Asia’s top teams.” She also commended her collaboration with Tete: “Teaming up with Salima has been a delight, and together, we’re driven to make this tournament truly memorable.”
