India questions UN’s negligence in offering the world’s largest democracy a permanent seat
India has been pursuing a seat in the United Nations Security Council for several years now but has been denied entry to date. But that hasn’t stopped India’s United Nations wing from continuing raising a voice against its neglect towards the world’s largest democracy. India’s permanent representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, pointed out the forum’s hypocrisy in denying India, Latin American, and African countries permanent membership and calling itself “inclusive.” She also stated that the interests of the five permanent members are kept above the needs of the rest of the world.
The United Nations currently has five permanent members – the United States of America, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and China. All these nations hold veto power over the discussions and decisions that take place in the forum. While nearly all the members have agreed to India’s inclusion in this list, China blocks a unanimous decision that is required to do so. However, India has taken the initiative to represent the global south that includes Asian, Latin American, and African countries and address their interests at an international scale.
