Harvinder Singh made history by becoming the first Indian to win archery gold at the Paralympics

Harvinder Singh made history by becoming the first Indian to win archery gold at the Paralympics. The 33-year-old achieved this feat by defeating Poland’s Lukasz Ciszek with a 6-0 scoreline in the men’s individual recurve final. This win took India’s overall medal tally to 22, with four gold medals at the ongoing Paralympics. Harvinder had previously secured a bronze medal in the previous edition held in Tokyo three years ago. Harvinder’s journey to the top is an inspiring one. Both his legs were impaired due to a dengue treatment gone wrong when he was just a toddler.

Despite this, he pursued his passion for archery and made his debut at the 2017 Para Archery World Championship. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Harvinder on his historic feat, praising his precision, focus, and unwavering spirit. Harvinder’s father had turned their farm into an archery range to support his training during the COVID-19 lockdown. Harvinder’s win is a testament to his hard work and dedication. He is pursuing a PhD in Economics and had previously secured a gold medal at the Jakarta Asian Para Games. His historic win three years ago marked him as the first Indian to win an archery medal at the Paralympics.
