IND vs. ZIM 5th T20I Match Report: Samson and Mukesh Star as India Rout Zimbabwe to Clinch Series 4-1
Team India secured a decisive 42-run victory over Zimbabwe in the fifth T20I, clinching the series with a 4-1 margin
Sanju Samson’s resilient half-century propelled India to a competitive total of 167, supported by an all-round effort from the bowlers, which restricted Zimbabwe to 125. Zimbabwe’s fielding was subpar, with several dropped catches allowing India to capitalize. Despite a rough start, conceding two sixes in his first over, Sikandar Raza managed to dismiss the dangerous Yashasvi Jaiswal. Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani each took a wicket in the Powerplay, with Muzarabani particularly impressive in his initial spell. Although Zimbabwe won the Powerplay, they allowed a crucial partnership to build. Brandon Mavuta and Muzarabani took vital wickets in the middle and late overs, but Zimbabwe’s performance faltered in the last two overs, turning the game in India’s favor. India struggled initially, losing three critical batters in the Powerplay.
However, Samson stabilized the innings with Riyan Parag, adding 65 runs. Samson then accelerated, scoring his second T20I half-century. Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh made vital contributions, lifting India to a decent total. In pursuit of 168, Zimbabwe faltered early, losing two quick wickets within the first three overs. Tadiwanashe Marumani and Dion Myers steadied the innings and counterattacked to reach 47/2 by the end of the Powerplay. Washington Sundar broke their 44-run partnership, and Myers continued to score quickly before his dismissal. Zimbabwe’s collapse continued with three more quick wickets, including a crucial run-out of their captain, Raza, which tilted the match in India’s favor. Faraz Akram hit a few powerful shots, but the required run-rate proved too steep, and Zimbabwe ultimately fell short. Despite the series loss, Zimbabwe can draw positives from their performance. A fresh start awaits for India under new coach Gautam Gambhir in Sri Lanka later this month.
