Goa Local Taxi Drivers crossing their lane!
A recent incident, courageously captured on camera, shows a taxi driver in Goa attempting to halt a Goa-Miles car with passengers onboard, coercing them to choose a local cab instead. The passengers, undeterred by the pressure, questioned the demand, boldly pointing out that the state-run app-based cab service offered a ride for Rs 300 while local taxis charged more than three times that amount. The passengers, showing remarkable courage, refuse to cancel the Goa-Miles ride. They question the legitimacy of being charged Rs 1,000 for a journey priced at Rs 300. The video of this brave confrontation quickly spreads on social media, drawing attention to the similar experiences tourists face with taxi operators in Goa.
Tourists, sharing their encounters, recount instances where Goa-Miles drivers had to resort to evasive driving to avoid confrontations with local taxi operators. In a particularly disturbing incident from 2018, a Goa-Miles driver was allegedly harassed and assaulted by the taxi mafia outside a prominent hotel in Arpora. The Anjuna police registered an FIR against a group of ’10-15 persons who are taxi operators or drivers,’ marking the first case where a Goa-Miles driver filed a complaint against other taxi drivers. The driver reported being restrained from continuing his journey by the group, who hurled abuses and threats at him. Since its launch in August 2018, the Goa-Miles app has faced resistance from the taxi mafia, with registered drivers bearing the brunt of their aggression.
