FSSAI directs concerns over possible sale of human milk
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive prohibiting the commercialization of human milk and its products in India. This directive, released on May 24, is titled “Advisory on Unauthorized Commercialization of human milk and its products,” and was issued in response to complaints from various registered societies. The advisory makes it clear that under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act, 2006, the processing and sale of human milk are strictly prohibited. The FSSAI has explicitly advised that all activities related to commercializing human milk and its products must cease immediately. The advisory also warns that any violations will result in legal action against the Food Business Operators (FBOs) involved, as per the regulations of the FSS Act, 2006. This is a serious matter, and the FSSAI mandates that state and central licensing authorities ensure no licenses or registrations are granted to FBOs dealing with the processing or selling of human milk.
The FSSAI’s stance stems from concerns about human milk’s unauthorized and potentially unsafe commercialization, which could have significant health implications. This move aims to safeguard public health and ensure that human milk remains a protected and regulated substance. The advisory strongly underscores the importance of regulatory authorities’ compliance and vigilance in preventing unauthorized commercial activities related to human milk. This decision highlights the FSSAI’s unwavering commitment to maintaining strict food safety standards and protecting consumers from unapproved and potentially harmful products. By enforcing these regulations, the FSSAI seeks to curb the exploitation of human milk and ensure that all food-related businesses operate within the legal framework established by the FSS Act, 2006.
