Eid al-Fitr 2023 : The history behind this auspicious festival

Eid al-Fitr 2023 is about to come to an end as Muslims around the world prepare to conclude this auspicious month with joyous celebrations. This day is determined depending on when the moon becomes visible during this Lunar cycle. If the moon is visible during New Moon, then Eid is celebrated the next day after having broken fast; otherwise, Muslims practice fast for one more day. The celebrations of Eid al-Fitr that take place all over the world are broadcast on television and radio.

The history behind Eid al-Fitr goes back to when Prophet Muhammad began this celebration after he migrated to Medina from Mecca. According to Anas, a companion of the Prophet, narrates that Prophet Muhammad observed two different days of celebrations surrounding recreation and merriment after his migration. He then stated that the Almighty had fixed two festive days – Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.
