EAM Jaishankar to address the plight of Bangladesh in a Parliament Meeting!
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed an all-party meeting in parliament on the ongoing political crisis and violence in Bangladesh
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar briefed an all-party meeting in parliament on the ongoing political crisis and violence in Bangladesh. He will state in the house India’s response to the situation. The meeting was attended by leaders of opposition parties, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned on Monday amid mounting protests and arrived in India. The protests in Bangladesh, led by students, demanded an end to a quota system for government jobs and grew into an uprising against Hasina’s government. At least 135 people were killed on Monday, and over 500 were injured.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed for peace in the state and supported the central government’s decision. The protests in Bangladesh were sparked by the controversial quota system, which reserved positions for specific groups. The Supreme Court recently ordered that 93% of government jobs be open to candidates on merit, without quotas. Jaishankar’s statement in parliament will outline India’s response to the situation amid reports of Sheikh Hasina’s arrival in India and the ongoing unrest in Bangladesh.
