Dev Patel to appear in a Hanuman inspired Character: Monkey Man!

Dev Patel’s debut as a director, Monkey Man, made its grand premiere at SXSW on Monday, captivating audiences with its homage to Indian mythology, particularly Lord Hanuman. The film, which follows a young man seeking retribution for his mother’s demise, garnered a standing ovation, leaving viewers enraptured by its blend of intense action and emotional depth.

Beyond marking Patel’s remarkable directorial entry, the film signifies a groundbreaking fusion of Indian folklore with mainstream Hollywood cinema. Drawing from his connection to the Ramayana and Lord Hanuman’s tales, instilled in him by his grandfather during childhood, Patel shared his inspiration for weaving Hanuman’s virtues of devotion, loyalty, courage, strength, humility, and discipline into the protagonist, Kid.

“Hanuman really captivated me,” Patel expressed, reflecting on the icon’s resonance within his family and Indian culture. “It reminded me of the iconography of Superman. I was like, this is amazing; I wish the world knew about it.”

However, Monkey Man delves beyond mythological homage, exploring socio-political issues like the caste system and societal exploitation prevalent in India. Patel’s screenplay, co-written with Paul Angunawela and John Collee, masterfully intertwines these themes, presenting a narrative that resonates across the globe while maintaining its roots in Indian culture.

By blending elements of Indian mythology(Hanuman), Indian cinema with Hollywood’s action genre, Monkey Man pioneers a new cinematic landscape, bridging cultural divides and expanding the portrayal of Indian mythology on the world stage. With its impending global release on April 5, 2024, and the enthusiastic reception at SXSW, Patel’s groundbreaking film is poised to inspire a new wave of storytelling, both in India and the West, rooted in the rich tapestry of Indian mythology.
