The incident of construction workers losing their lives occurred when a wall collapsed during heavy rainfall in the area. The rains resulted in waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. Multiple deaths have been reported across the city. The wall reportedly collapsed on Friday, and the incident was reported to the Delhi Fire Services (DFS) around 5:30 am. On Friday, five other deaths were reported in rain-related incidents as the monsoon arrived with fury, bringing the city’s highest rainfall in a single day of June in 88 years. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s primary weather station, recorded 228.1 mm of rainfall in 24 hours ending at 8:30 am on Friday, more than three times the June rainfall average of 74.1 mm, the highest for the month in at least 16 years.
Videos and photos shared on social media showed vehicles submerged in water and commuters’ difficulties during work hours. Furthermore, the Delhi airport witnessed the collapse of a roof at Terminal 1 amid heavy rains, which killed one person and injured six. A compensation of Rs 20 lakh was announced for the deceased’s family and Rs 3 lakh for the injured. It has been the highest 24-hour rain in Delhi in June since 1936; the average rainfall in the area in the last 30 years is 75.2 mm,” Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) said in a statement. The heavy rains led to significant waterlogging and traffic disruptions throughout the city, causing widespread inconvenience and highlighting the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather events.
