Australian Cricketer David Warner retires from International Cricket
David Warner’s illustrious 15-year international cricket career has ended as Australia was eliminated from the T20 World Cup following Afghanistan’s victory over Bangladesh
It marked a subdued conclusion for the cricket legend, whose career has been a mix of exceptional performances and controversies. David Warner’s international journey began with a T20I debut in 2009. His final appearance came during Australia’s 24-run loss to India on June 24th, where he managed to score only six runs. David Warner exited the field with his head low, unaware it would be his last international match. Australia, the defending champions, had a disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, finishing third in their Super 8s group with only two points from victories over Bangladesh. They suffered an upset loss to Afghanistan and a comprehensive defeat by India.
David Warner’s retirement has been gradual. He played his final ODI in November 2023 during a World Cup win over India and his last Test against Pakistan in January 2024. He had indicated earlier that this T20 World Cup would be his farewell tournament. He retired as the highest scorer from Australia in T20 internationals and the 7th most productive player across the globe in the format, scoring 3,277 runs from 110 matches. He averaged 33.43 with a strike rate of 142.47, including one hundred and 28 fifties. His career, marked by explosive batting and significant contributions to Australian cricket, ends with a low-key exit from the international stage.
