Chennai-based startup Agnikul Cosmos successfully launched its Agnibaan SOrTeD rocket
Chennai-based startup Agnikul Cosmos successfully launched its Agnibaan SOrTeD rocket from its private launchpad in Sriharikota on May 30.
This launch follows four previous attempts that were called off. The SOrTeD (Sub-Orbital Technological Demonstrator) rocket is a single-stage vehicle powered by India’s first semi-cryogenic engine, which uses a mix of liquid and gas propellants. The rocket was developed and assembled at Agnikul’s facilities at IIT Madras. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, MoS for IT and Technology, announced the successful launch, noting the significant achievement for Indian space technology. Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO of Agnikul Cosmos, credited thousands of hours of work and support from IN-SPACe and ISRO for this milestone. The Agnibaan rocket can carry up to 300 kg to a 700 km high orbit, marking a significant advancement in India’s spacetech capabilities.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, praised the innovation, highlighting its inspirational value for young entrepreneurs. ISRO congratulated the Agnikul team, noting the milestone of achieving the first controlled flight of a semi-cryogenic liquid engine through additive manufacturing. IN-SPACe chairman Pawan Goenka described the launch as a historic moment, emphasizing the innovative use of a single-piece 3D printed engine. Agnikul Cosmos operates India’s first private launchpad, which was used for this mission. The startup plans to begin commercial missions in Q3 of FY 2024-2025, with further launches expected in Q4 of FY 2024-2025. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his congratulatory message, calling the successful launch a momentous occasion for India’s space sector and a testament to the ingenuity of the nation’s youth. He extended his best wishes to the Agnikul Cosmos team for their future endeavors.
