Can using public toilets cause UTI?
Urinary Tract Infections or UTIs commonly occur among people, and yet, it is barely discussed. Women are more likely to get UTIs, which further makes them hesitant to use restrooms outside their houses because of sanitation concerns. It is a common belief that sitting on public toilet seats is likely to cause UTI, but several doctors argue otherwise. Dr Asha Hiremath, who works as an Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon in Motherhood Hospitals, Banglore, has told Financial Express that chances of getting infected by UTI in public toilets are less but possible.
She stated that the bladder from where urine is passed out, called urethra, is shorter in women compared to men. Thus, the chance of getting an infection is higher in women as the germs can enter in a shorter span of time; but simply sitting on the toilet seat does not cause UTI. Regardless, it would be better for everyone, especially women, not to use public washrooms unless it is necessary. And if you do need to use them, carry a disinfectant spray or use plastic covers if available.
