BSF Denies Claims by Mamata Banerjee on Voter Intimidation
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had recently levied major allegations against the Border Security Force of voter intimidation in her state. The BSF Guwahati Frontier has given a brief response to these allegations which reads, “It is to appraise that the allegations leveled against BSF by the CM West Bengal during a rally at Cooch Behar, is totally baseless and far from the truth. No complaint of intimidation of any person in the border area has been received so far by BSF or any other sister agency. BSF is fully committed to the peaceful and unhindered electoral process in the border and other areas.”
Furthermore, BSF’s statement also emphasised that they have been deployed on election duty to ensure the security of the voters and that they have been responsibly securing the borders of India and have never engaged in acts of intimidation towards the population for any reason. The security situation in the border areas and several states of West Bengal tends to remain volatile during election seasons. The previous state elections that took place in 2021, when Mamata Banerjee was re-elected as the Chief Minister, also witnessed mass-scale violence and cases of arson, which prompted ramping up of security in the state for the voters.
